Fantasies, Science Fiction, and other works
Everyone has at least one book in them. Maybe just a short story, some poetry, or perhaps a whole novel. Getting the idea onto print can be like pulling teeth. For some people it might be music. A song you hear in your head made up by your inner muse. I've been hatching one or two story ideas without knowing what to do with them.
I've also been a fan of the manga of Osmau Tezuka (and without knowing who he even was) for some time after being exposed to the Astro Boy cartoons as a kid. When the 2009 CGI movie came out I re-discovered the boy robot, and learned all about his creator thanks to the magic of the internet. I wondered if the technology behind Astro Boy was even possible today, and in my mind I began to combine his origin story with some ideas I had been toying with. I was influenced by Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt as well as a few movies such as the Indiana Jones series, Star Trek, Back to the Future, and Brainstorm. I invented a unique setting under the influence of the above sources. I named some of the characters for boyhood friends or used parodies of names from the manga or such.
Here is the background for my version of Atom's story.
Tetsuwan Atom, also known as Mighty Atom, or Astro boy is a fictional story created by Osmau Tezuka. Tezuka, his manga and anime play and important role in the life of the American scientist Dr. Albert Tenamann. Tenamann grows up in post war Japan to American parents who served in the US forces during the American occupation period. As the US occupation forces leave Adam and Elizabeth Tenamann decide to stay in Japan and raise their son there. Elizabeth now works for the US embassy, and Adam Tenamann finds work with companies exporting Japanese goods to the states. The three of them cross paths with Osmau Tezuka several times and Albert learns to read Japanese from Tezuka's Manga. The family eventually returns to the states where Albert becomes a scientist working at several government think tanks. After the death of his father his mother returns to Japan to live with friends. Albert travels back with his mother where he meets his future wife. He returns to the states with his bride, but she dies a few years following the birth of their only son, Adam. Terrorists threaten Albert's work and target his son to get what they want. Adam is injured in a traffic accident on his bicycle trying to escape from the Terrorists and lies in a coma. Filled with grief, and having the advanced technological tools at his disposal Albert follows in the footsteps of the fictional Dr. Tenma and creates a robot in the image of his son with fantastic abilities. Thus he re-lives the story that so influenced him in his childhood.
The first story follows the life of Atom's father, Atom's birth in a secret lab under the Museum in New York, and sets the stage for his future adventures helping mankind. My hat's off to Osmau Tezuka, I hope he won't mind my re-creating his Atom in a different image. I only wish I could have created him for real as I dreamed of as a boy watching the anime.
